The members of our Club were delighted when James Pedrana, Managing Director of UBC Group visited the club to present them with a cheque for £490.
Following an approach by the club, the UBC boss agreed to sponsor a Rotary Shelter Box that would offer immediate aid to overseas disaster areas.
The Rotary Shelter Boxes are designed to give up to ten people shelter, warmth and comfort if they live in an area that has been hit by disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides or famine. They are held in storage in the UK and can be on the road within hours when a disaster occurs anywhere in the world.
Amongst other things, the box itself contains a ten-man tent; ten sleeping bags; children’s activities set; a tool box; water purification kit and camper stove for cooking. The airtight box can then be used for storage of food.
James Campbell, member of the club's international committee explained, “The shelter box campaign demonstrates the way in which rotary works with other charities to ensure aid gets to where it is needed most. The boxes are supplied by the rotary clubs themselves with the shipping, delivery and supply being undertaken in partnership with other UK charities.
“Sometimes the areas worst hit can be high up in very difficult to reach mountainous areas with no roads or access routes. However, in order to ensure the most needy get the boxes, on these occasion the shelter box scheme has even used donkeys to get the boxes to where they need to be.
He went on, “With rotary distributing thousands of boxes, we have seen the evidence of way in which these boxes can make a huge difference to the hundreds of thousands of families who have been affected by disasters in the past.
Club President George McRae commented, “We are very grateful to James and UBC for being our first corporate shelter box sponsor. His sponsorship will allow another box to be sent directly to the area of most need at any point in the future when it is needed.
He continued, “This is an international aid initiative our club is involved with and we are hopeful that we may be able to attract further corporate partners sponsorship to be able to send more shelter boxes to where they are needed most.
Any local businesses interested in taking parting this sponsorship initiative should get in contact with the club any Wednesday at the Waterside Hotel in Inverness.
